Learn guitar without having any musical education?

Hi all!

Is it possible to learn how to play a musical instrument (e.g. guitar) without having ANY musical education?

Thanks in advance!

Even with tab, you need an understanding of music. I would at least get educated on the basics: Time signatures, note symbols/duration, simple theory, key signatures. It will be very helpful in situations where you’re jamming with a band and someone wants you to play a particular note(s) in a specific 4/4 rhythm – you’re going to look like an idiot if you can’t.

Only if you know how to play by ear. Otherwise it is impossible to play because you do not know how to read sheet music!!!

Tablature is as simple as it gets.

Why the thumbs downs? Look up tabs, play it, according to the song, or by ear. NO musical talent required. Don’t need to know key signatures or meters or anything. The flats and sharps are already implemented into the tablature, and oftentimes, the numbers are placed closer or further apart depending on timing. Get a good rhythm down and you’re golden.

Yeup. One day I bought a cheap guitar and started playing. Now 5 months later I am in a hardcore punk band. I never took any form of musical education. I learned how to play by playing Misfits, DOA, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, and 7 Seconds songs(all hardcore punk bands). I looked up the tabs and I had a song nailed in a day. Unless you want to play complicated music, it is easy to learn how to play the guitar if you put 20-30 hours a week in it. Just jam around you will get good, but it may take a little longer. But either way, you do not need to have any form of education to play the guitar, write music, and rock ass.
