Do you think that games like Guitar Hero are contributing to a lack of interest in musical instruments?

I’ve heard both sides – that the games might spark an interest that was not there before and that the games are just "replacing" musical intstruments for young people. What do you think?

I think that Guitar Hero and Rock Band are creating the interest. After playing Rock Band, I had the urge to go play on my drum pad for a while. Lately, I have become more and more interested in the idea of picking up the drums again. I can see why people would think that the games would take away from the amount of people playing the actual instruments, but it is nothing in comparison. Playing an actual song on the drums is MUCH more rewarding than playing one on the game.

guitar hero no doubt is far easier to learn than a real guitar, but alas you can only play the songs they want you to play (unless you know how to make custom songs)

i believe guitar hero sparks an interest into playing the guitar, as it did for me

i got the guitar but still havent learned to play, would be cool to rock along to avenged sevenfold or bullet for my valentine

I seriously doubt that someone who is a music enthusiast would allow a video game to replace their desire to play an instrument.
That really doesn’t make any sense.

I think it gives a spark of interest to actually pick up a real guitar, my 10 year old brother recently is trying to learn how to play a guitar after playing guitar hero.

I do not think guitar hero and similar games take away from interest in real musical instruments. It is a game and requires skill, but not nearly as much as playing a real instrument and not as rewarding. I play guitar hero and I play real guitar, piano, and take voice lessons. guitar hero is a game and just that. It is a seperate entity from actual instruments

I think guitar hero and rockband are great. Personally , since playing the games I have been more interested in learning to play the actual instruments.
